About Eccleshall Lodge
Nestled in the historic market town in Staffordshire, Eccleshall Lodge No. 5389 carries a legacy that is both rich and profound. Founded in 1933, amidst a backdrop of significant local and global changes, the Lodge was established by a group of visionary men who sought to create a sanctuary of brotherhood, learning, and philanthropy.
The Founding Vision
Eccleshall Lodge No. 5389 was founded amidst the cobbled streets and emerging modernity of Eccleshall in 1933. It arose from a collective aspiration among the town's businessmen and community stalwarts – who sought to foster a Masonic fraternity locally. They were already affiliated with lodges like John O’Gaunts, St Michaels’ and Isaak Walton lodges, and their names are eternally etched on the founders’ board.
Choosing the lodge's location involved the application to Grand lodge. After negotiations with Joules Stone Brewery, thanks to Brothers Taylor and Redman, the King's Arms hostelry was transformed to accommodate the Masons at a modest rent. Originally intended to be named "St Chads", it was officially registered by the Grand Lodge as Eccleshall No. 5389. Its consecration on March 6th, 1933, was a humble affair with tea, reflecting the founders’ simplicity.
The Early Years
The first Worshipful Master was Bro Wilkes-Gorse, a local doctor known for his countryside medical visits. Other notable founders included the articulate Rev. Prebendary Formation Page and Bro Ellison, a Masonic scholar. Throughout wartime and beyond, the lodge adapted, foregoing formal attire for dinners due to the war effort and shifting meeting times to accommodate travel restrictions.
Eccleshall Lodge No. 5389 weathered the storm of World War II with resilience, maintaining traditions and adjusting Masonic progression as needed. Post-war, the lodge became a beacon of charity, extending support beyond Masonic confines. This included contributions to local landmarks like Lichfield Cathedral, showcasing Freemasonry's impact on heritage and community.
